So i am about to list a few words/phrases i am consciously working on correcting or basically words/phrases commonly "mistaken" or used incorrectly by a lot of people. Please feel free to add whatever i miss out or let me know if you concur as well so i correct myself and others in the long run. (I just decided to add some razz sayings by my beloved Nigerians just for fun. lol (enjoy)
*"I'm Coming" NO! you are not coming, you are actually going as you say this instead of 'give me a minute or i'll be back.'
*We still or many of us use "Maggi" for every seasoning cube the markets have to offer, Maggi is a brand name NOT a general word for seasoning cubes.
*Just as i previously mentioned above, the same goes for every toothpaste being generally called "Maclean," i personally am not a victim of this.
*"Go-Slow" as opposed to traffic/traffic jam. Some people go as far as "Hold-Up," doesn't that kinda mean "stick-up?" ...... i am just saying.
*Could you please be "upstanding?" meaning 'please, stand up!' Doesn't 'upstanding' refer to like a morally respectable or upright person? Tell me please!.
*"Reverse back,"........eeeeeeeeeermmmm....can you reverse forward?
*"Rewind it back"......... People how far now?
*"Next tomorrow", okay so i said that a lot as a young one and even till today i unconsciously say it but it's on my "to-do list" to get it off, yes i am trying my best..... People it is 'the day AFTER tomorrow'.
*"She was ON black shirt and blue jeans"
*"PULL your shoes!!"......NO, i want to PUSH IT! kmt.......
*"Sheltox" (Sp?) for any kind of insecticide i forgot to mention at the top.I guess its a Nigerian thing to generalize brand names for everything under the same category. The list goes on....OMO (detergent)
*"Dress" as opposed to 'move/scoot'.
*She "CHANCED/SHUNTED" instead of 'cut me'.
*I want to "EASE" myself, NAIJAAAAAAAAAAAA.
*Pronouncing the 'b' in "PlumBer".....ummmm, last time i checked it was silent.
*How about when people pronounce 'SUITE' as "SUIT". AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!
*Pardon me....When people say "MESS" in an effort to say 'fart'. (I couldn't help it) lol.
*Have you just noticed how everywhere that is beyond the border of Nigeria is all of a sudden "Abroad". Hmmm, that word may be accurate but NO it is Not accurate to me.
~~~~~~~ENOUGH SAID~~~~~~~~
That is all i can re-call for now, drop anything you feel is meant to be here that i omitted, People PRAY please, We DO NOT need to be referred to as "animals" OR the likes in areas we are trying to make a living in. Please, have your reputation at heart anytime you open up your mouth to speak. Thank You, i await your comments.....
CARAMEL.....xoxox
(have a wonderful week ahead and Thank You all, My 'Oga' is well. Your prayers were answered *Molar-to-Molar* smile.)
hahah! @ When people say "MESS" in an effort to say 'fart'.
ReplyDeleteLMAO @ "minerals" - coke and fanta!!!
ReplyDeleteoh the motherland! how I love you so much!
actually,everywhere outside ur country is abroad,and nobody in nigeria ever uses dress when speaking english they use it when speaking pidgin,and can u be upstanding..is correct,we really should have checked ur dictionary before doing this post,and 'hold up' also actually means 'cause to be slowed down or delayed' so in a way that is not even wrong,and 'pull' can also mean to take away...the example in my dictionary is 'pull the cans off the shelf'..therefore you can say pull the shoes off your leg...so that aslo isnt wrong english..and also chanced isnt a mistake..its a slang in nigeria that people use..so u cant classify that as a mistake,cs its said purposely.so english in naija isnt that bad....i rest my case!
ReplyDeleteabroad means:in a foreign country...even a place far from home...seriously u should have checked ur dictionary...that means if im in lagos and i travel far north then that is also abroad for me...talk more of leaving the shores of nigeria....here in america common mexico here they say abroad.so maybe ur the one not getting it write not the people around you.and also if u mean to say trouser and u say troser,its because our first language isnt english,we speak native languages which affect the way we pronounce stuff,the peeps in england and america ahve english and only english to learn so you cant compare them to us with our numerous languages.have u ever heard funmi iyanda speak?she uses her yoruba accent whenever shes away from naija and peeps(in high placs)say:i love ur accent thata so beautiful!,here i no even want the accent sef cs everytime i speak people know im from a foreign country and respect me for that!!!...so no offence...i didnt come here to argue with u or make u angry but i dont agree with ur post!and the stuff about coke and fanta as minerals...ive neve heard anybody say it...that stupid thing started in naija as a joke when a comedian told a story about a government offical and stuff...it never happened!!!so please get ur facts right!nobody in nija ever thinks thouse are minerals....everybody in niaja even a small baby will mention crude oil first sef!biko me i don tire!this is just my take on the whole issue.
ReplyDeleteLEGGY:::: calm down o! it was just a harmless post i posted just for a lil comedy and like i sed some razz saying wer going to be in it...i won't say much but....calm down, we are all learning okay??.
